Proper Fish Handling

Some of y'all didn't get the memo so here it is again for those anglers who need it...

To properly handle a fish when releasing it, use wet hands, hold it horizontally, minimize handling time, support its body along its length, avoid touching its gills or eyes, and release it head first into the water as quickly as possible; ideally, dehooking the fish while it's still in the water whenever possible to reduce stress and maximize its chances of survival.

Key points to remember:
Wet hands: Always use wet hands or gloves to handle a fish to maintain its protective slime coat.

Support the body: When removing a fish from the water, support its body along its length to avoid internal damage.

Avoid sensitive areas: Never hold a fish by its gills, eyes, or mouth.

Dehooking tool: Use a dehooking tool to remove the hook with minimal handling.

Release quickly: Return the fish to the water as soon as possible.

Consider the fish's condition: If a fish is exhausted, gently revive it by facing it into the current to move water over its gills before releasing.
